Stonefruit Grown in Victoria
Victoria produces approximately 75% of Australia’s stonefruit, including apricots, peaches, plums, and nectarines. The main growing regions are the Goulburn Valley, Mildura, and Swan Hill, which provide ideal conditions with fertile soils and a moderate, temperate climate that allow growers to produce fruit with excellent flavour, texture, and colour.
Orchard Practices
Stonefruit varieties are typically grafted onto rootstock, and many orchards grow multiple varieties to extend the picking season. This ensures fresh fruit is available over several weeks, with each variety offering its own unique flavour, texture, and colour.
When visiting a “Pick Your Own” orchard, look for fruit that is firm but slightly soft to touch, vibrant in colour, and fragrant. Sampling different varieties is highly recommended, as each has its own distinct taste. For special occasions, ask if the orchard can provide extra-large or premium-quality fruit, perfect for gifts or entertaining.
Stonefruit Season
The Victorian stonefruit season usually begins in early November with early apricots and peaches and continues through to late February, depending on the variety and region. This extended season allows growers to supply fresh, high-quality fruit to both domestic and export markets over several months.
