The Fruit Growers Victoria conference will be a premier event

Day 2 of the conference will be a morning visit to Plunkett Orchards, Ardmona where delegates will get to see the new Greefa sorting and packing line in action as well as additional trade displays and on farm demonstrations.

FGV 2022 Conference Speakers

  • Alberto Dorigoni

    Alberto Dorigoni

    A great opportunity to hear from Alberto Dorigoni who will be Zoomed in from Italy.
    Alberto Dorigoni, born in Trento, Italy in 1962 and graduated in Scienze Agrarie in 1987, is a former researcher at Foundation E. Mach, where he worked from 1988 to 2021.

    A fruit grower himself, he carried out agronomic trials in the 2 experiment farms of F.E.M. in the Trentino Province.

    After working on thinning compounds and on the use of PGR’s, the main interest of his trials in the last 15 years moved toward the training system of apple and pear to develop a sustainable orchard that reduces input of chemicals, fossil fuels and labour and that is suitable to mechanization.

    In the last years he published several national and international articles on this topic and was invited to present all over the world his vision of a pedestrian 2D fruit-wall similar to the modern vineyards.

    He also invented and patented in 2012 the “window pruning machine”, a device that mimics hand pruning, designed for reducing labour of pruning. He is giving advice to several big and small orchard owners in many parts of the world, with focus on orchard design and tree architecture.

    Chris Peters

    Chris Peters grew up on a fruit orchard in the lower Yakima Valley and has worked with pear, apple, cherry, peach, nectarine, apricot, plum, blueberry, and pomegranate over the course of 32 years in the fruit industry of Washington State and Australia.

    Chris has worked with a number of different fruit organizations:
    • Horticulturist at Gilbert Orchards • Area Manager at Legacy Fruit Packers • Assistant Manager at Auvil Fruit Co. Vantage
    • Pome Industry Development Officer Fruit Growers of Victoria • Business Manager Orchards W.F. Montague Pty Ltd.

    • Chris currently serves on the Washington State Tree Fruit Research Commission, Apple Horticulture/Pathology Subcommittee, 1996-2005 and 2011–present and previously was the Pear commissioner, 1999-2005.

    Chris has served the Washington State Horticulture Association: • Pear Integrated Pest Management Executive Committee, 1997-2001 • Integrated Pest Management Work Group, 1997-98 • Environmental Affairs Committee, 1991-2005

    Chris is a member of the: • Washington State Horticulture Association, 1987-2005 and 2011-present • Yakima Pomological Club, 1989-2005 and 2011-present • International Dwarf Fruit Tree Association, 1989-Present • International Society of Horticultural Science, 1991-Present

    Chris’ most recent 'best day' in a pear orchard was a couple of years ago showing Dr. Stuart Tustin from The New Zealand Institute for Plant Food Research a double cordon UFO D’Anjou planting at one of the orchards he managed in Zillah, WA.

    Kieran-Murphy

    Kieran Murphy is a Technology Development Lead within Agriculture Victoria Research.  

    He is currently leading a traceability foundations research program focusing on Horticulture tree crops traceability systems utilising sophisticated spatial technology and new and emerging sensor systems. This includes developing a traceability framework that will support existing and new AgTech collaborations and partnerships.

    Victoria’s Food and Fibre Traceability Blueprint

    Agriculture Victoria is strengthening the application and value of traceability across food and fibre domestic and export supply chains.

    This Blueprint will enable Victoria to become a global leader in traceability. It will ensure that access to both domestic and international markets for Victorian food and fibre exports is maintained and enhanced. It will also grow demand for Victoria’s premium products that meet high integrity standards.

    Investing in collaborative research projects with industry will help address key traceability issues and problems along domestic and export supply chains to the end customer.

  • Lawrence Graham

    Lawrence Graham

    Financial services professional, real estate, stock & station and business agent. Boutique agribusiness specialist.

    Qualifications and experience include an MBA (Finance) and 20 year experience in Australian Agribusiness.

    Key strengths include project facilitation, business development, risk/compliance, portfolio & business growth and human resource management. Leader of various project teams and tasks.

    Excellent understanding of both micro and macro environment and deep understanding of agribusiness and agribusiness supply chain processes.

    Strong practical and theoretical experience complemented with strong qualifications in various disciplines.

  • Robert Green

    Robert Green

    Robert Green is a fourth generation grower at Oakleigh Orchards in Lenswood, South Australia (est 1893), personally growing apples for 40 years with a family history of 130 years. 

    Robert’s focus has been efficiency and productivity and has achieved extraordinary yields and grown a high percentage of his crop to the highest quality. 

    Innovation and design are a key part of the day to day running of the orchard with Robert developing his own scheduling control system for the drip irrigation and fertigation setups and the development of engineering solutions such as picking and pruning platforms and a root ripper for vigour control in the orchard.

    Robert has been the recipient of a number of awards over the years including: 
     
    • Australian Apple Grower of the Year 2012 
    • Australian Horticulturist of the Year 2014 
    • ABC Rural and Kondinin Group's Australian Farmer of the Year 2014

  • Steve Burdette

    Steve Burdette

    Senior executive with a strong background in agribusiness, ranging from field packing, logistics and marketing to commercialising intellectual property rights, restructuring/mergers and developing extensive national and international contacts and relationships. Expert in all aspects of horticultural supply chain; from orchard development (including drought mitigation strategies and environmental sustainability) through to market.

    Pragmatic experience is complimented by extensive knowledge in R&D tax, chairing a number of national and regional committees including Biosecurity, Fruit Fly, Variety and Rootstock leadership and seasonal worker programs.  Founded two variety commercialisation companies and formed grower clubs in order to maximise the returns and market opportunities. Author and co-author of a number of technical publications.

    Participated in the Seasonal Worker Programme since the pilot was introduced in 2012. Extensive knowledge and experience was gained between 2012 and 2018 in the recruitment, selection, administration and welfare and wellbeing of up to 200 workers from the Pacific. Key driver in the formation of the Approved Employers of Australia Ltd and chaired the Association between 2019 and 2021 and is now the Executive Officer.

  • Steve Lockyer

    Steve Lockyer

    Steve Lockyer is the Managing Director of one of the leading independent “Decision Agriculture Systems” companies, Inform Ag.

    He has an extensive electrical, engineering, factory automation and control systems background and has worked with leading industrial business’s in project management and R&D roles through to senior management in Visy’s automation division.

    Steve’s passion for rural life saw a transition into the Agriculture sector in 2016. He draws on his industrial background to provide farm management software, automation and control solutions to address current and future Agriculture and Supply Chain challenges.

    Steve and Inform Ag have undertaken some significant whole of farm control & irrigation projects, as well as integrating systems that work together on farm to enable operations to make informed decisions. Steve brings a “fresh” way of thinking to the Agricultural Technology space and see’s fantastic opportunities for substantial gains and improvements to be made.

  • Tim Bond

    Tim Bond

    Tim Bond is the Sales Manager, Automation at J-Tech Systems, who are a major supplier of labelling, packaging and automation solutions to the fresh produce industry.

    Tim joined the J-Tech team in 2016 after working with multinational companies like Visy, Hallmark, Canon and Mercedes-Benz in both engineering and sales roles.
    He has an Honours Degree in Mechanical Engineering and he has the enviable ability to think outside the box to come up with automation solutions that are practical, while delivering the best possible results for any packhouse.

    Tim has an inherent ability to understand and empathise with the needs of his customers as well as the changing needs of the industry. His passion is delivering efficient solutions with automation as well as reducing waste and improving sustainability for the industry as a whole.
