Day 2 of the conference will be a morning visit to Plunkett Orchards at Ardmona, where delegates will get to see the new Greefa sorting and packing line in action as well as additional trade displays and demonstrations.

If Covid-19 restrictions stop the Conference being conducted in August 2021 it will be postponed to an appropriate future date at the same venue.
All registrations and payments will be held over to the new dates.

  • Andrew Smith

    Andrew Smith

    Not all 4th generation farmers are willing to make the big decisions that to some people may seem like a risk. This is not the case with Andrew Smith.

    “The industry when I started was in demise and production was under threat from emerging economies. (I’ve) Simply been moving and changing to stay in the game.”

    Over the last 26 years, Andrew has continually innovated the family business, which now lays claim to being the largest organic apple grower in the country.

    In 2006 R&R Smith became the first Tasmanian apple business to get a direct vendor number which allowed them to serve Woolworths distribution centre in Australia direct from Tasmania.

    In 2016 and 2017 R&R Smith won the organic supplier of the year at the national supplier of the year awards. The business continues to expand at a rapid rate due to the demand in clean, green and certified organic produce.

    In 2018 R&R Smith have acquired the commercial license for a new apple variety out of Belgium and are in the process of trademarking and commercialising this variety for Australian consumers. They are major employers in the Huon.

    Hunter Jay

    Hunter Jay is the CEO of Ripe Robotics, and the engineer behind the company's autonomous fruit picking robot.

    Hunter has several years’ experience in artificial intelligence and entrepreneurship.

    Their presentation will be focused around “Autonomous Fruit Picking.” Ripe Robotics currently has fruit picking robots in commercial trials. Their presentation will cover “What we've learnt, what we need from growers, and what the future will look like.”

    Marcel Veens

    Marcel Veens is a Horticultural Adviser to growers throughout Australia
    In July 2005 Marcel Veens Horticultural Adviser Pty. Ltd. was launched, designed to provide technical and managerial support on all aspects of pomefruit, stonefruit and cherry cultivation. Although its principal clients are professional fruit growers in Australia we welcome contracts from abroad.
    Marcel Veens was born in Herveld, the Netherlands into a family of third generation orchardists. Eight of his nine brothers are fruitgrowers. He has worked in fruit production in several countries around the world including New Zealand, France, Thailand, and of course the Netherlands.

  • Michael Williams

    Michael Williams

    Michael Williams is a well-known identity in the Australian fresh produce industry and is the General Manager of J-Tech Systems, a major supplier of labelling, packaging and automation solutions to the industry.

    Michael has an inherent ability to understand, and then find the right solution for his customers and the changing needs of the industry. He possesses that enviable ability to think outside the box, respond quickly and then deliver the right results.

    Michael has a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of all sides of the fresh produce industry having started his early career in the management and set up of retail supermarkets. He then had a stint working in real estate, before joining J-Tech Systems in 2010 in a packaging sales role. He then moved into the role of Sales Manager in 2015 with the responsibility for all of packaging and automation sales, and then becoming General Manager in 2017.

    As a family owned company, J-Tech Systems and Michael share the same values and goals and have a focus on a can-do attitude, delivering the right solutions for customers and a belief in being fair, equitable and reliable. These values have seen J-Tech Systems grow under Michael’s guidance to become a well-recognised and significant supplier to the industry as a whole.

  • Salah Sukkarieh

    Salah Sukkarieh

    Salah Sukkarieh is the Professor of Robotics and Intelligent Systems at the University of Sydney, and is the CEO of Agerris, a new Agtech startup company from the ACFR developing autonomous robotic solutions to improve agricultural productivity and environmental sustainability.

    He was the Director Research and Innovation at the Australian Centre for Field Robotics from 2007-2018, where he led the strategic research and industry engagement program in the world's largest field robotics institute.

    He is an international expert in the research, development and commercialisation of field robotic systems and has led a number of robotics and intelligent systems R&D projects in logistics, commercial aviation, aerospace, education, environment monitoring, agriculture and mining.

    Salah was awarded the NSW Science and Engineering Award for Excellence in Engineering and Information and Communications Technologies in 2014, the 2017 CSIRO Eureka Prize for Leadership in Innovation and Science, and the 2019 NSW Australian of the Year nominee. Salah is a Fellow of Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE), and has over 500 academic and industry publications in robotics and intelligent systems.

  • Steve Lockyer

    Steve Lockyer

    Steve Lockyer is the Managing Director of one of the leading independent “Decision Agriculture Systems” companies, Inform Ag.

    He has an extensive electrical, engineering, factory automation and control systems background and has worked with leading industrial business’s in project management and R&D roles through to senior management in Visy’s automation division.

    Steve’s passion for rural life saw a transition into the Agriculture sector in 2016. He draws on his industrial background to provide farm management software, automation and control solutions to address current and future Agriculture and Supply Chain challenges.

    Steve and Inform Ag have undertaken some significant whole of farm control & irrigation projects, as well as integrating systems that work together on farm to enable operations to make informed decisions. Steve brings a “fresh” way of thinking to the Agricultural Technology space and see’s fantastic opportunities for substantial gains and improvements to be made.
