"Bye Bye Fruit Fly" community information session - Tuesday 17 October 2017

Media Release

Tongala Shire Hall – Tuesday 17 October 2017

Tongala and district residents are invited to get along to the ‘Bye Bye Fruit Fly’ community event and hear first-hand what simple steps can be taken in home gardens to help reduce the spread of Queensland Fruit Fly (QFF).

The Tongala Lions Club’s ‘Bye Bye Fruit Fly’ event is supported by the Goulburn Murray Valley Regional Fruit Fly Action Group and Campaspe Shire Council. The event aims to spread the word on the importance of fruit fly management in the home.

The ‘Bye Bye Fruit Fly’ event includes a school session and a community information session. The school session will see primary school students decorate QFF bottle traps and learn about strategies to manage fruit fly in their home, before enjoying a barbecue lunch and freshly picked apples from local growers. Students will take their decorated traps home and be able to place them in their garden and do their bit to reduce the spread of QFF.

Both events are open to members of the public.

QFF is a serious risk to the region’s horticulture industry, backyard orchards and vegetable gardens. Fruit fly are generally relatively dormant during winter when the weather is too cold for them to be active, however start to become more active in Spring.

The Tongala ‘Bye Bye Fruit Fly’ program will be put to the Lions Convention in October to be adopted by Lions Clubs in NSW and Victorian Clubs and if approved and rolled out by other Clubs will have a positive effect on raising community awareness about fruit fly management.
